Yarra Ranges Council is to advocate for significant funding from external sources to support a new aquatic facility in the Yarra Valley.

The need for a new aquatic centre follows a feasibility study that reviewed the existing indoor and outdoor pool facilities in Healesville and to consider the future needs of the Yarra Valley community.

Council resolved on Tuesday 9th September to include the findings from the feasibility study in its review of the 2007 Aquatic Facilities Strategic Plan.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said the Yarra Valley Aquatic Feasibility Study is a critical document with current facilities in the area aging and needing a long term strategic plan.

Mayor McAllister stated “we are reviewing our Aquatic Strategy at the moment and it is very timely that the information gathered from the Yarra Valley Feasibility Study be included.

“The current indoor and outdoor pools in Healesville are coming to the end of their life span and we need to prepare for the future.

“It is important that we come to a long-term solution that provides the Yarra Valley community access to quality pools, fitness and leisure facilities before we commit to any funding.”

The feasibility study offers three options and recommends the construction of a new $20 million pool facility in Queens Park in Healesville.

Mayor McAllister said the community will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the Strategy later in the year.

She added “it is critical that the community is a key partner in shaping the future of all our pools and that they provide input into the Aquatic Strategy update.

Council will use the findings from the study to assist with gaining funding support from State and Federal Governments, as well as other external sources.
