read moreThe YMCA WA and the Town of Port Hedland are to continue to work together to build a healthy, unified and vibrant community following the Council’s three-year extension of the YMCA’s aquatic and recreation facilities’ management contract.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said that she was extremely pleased that YMCA WA (formerly known as YMCA Perth) will continue to build and support the community through their management of the Town's leisure facilities and looked forward to seeing diverse and innovative programming, corporate programs and asset renewal over the next three years.
Mayor Howlett stated "YMCA WA have provided significant support, efficiency and expertise to the Town of Port Hedland through consistent management of Wanangkura Stadium, South Hedland Aquatic Centre, and Gratwick Aquatic Centre.
"They have created a solid foundation for all three facilities during the previous few years - building a strong membership base, delivering a popular and ever-evolving recreation and fitness schedule and creating diverse health and lifestyle programs that all the community can avail of and that are delivered by a competent and fully trained team of professional staff.
"In terms of service and management of the facilities to the Town of Port Hedland, the YMCA continue to maintain and manage three key recreational assets for our community, provide financial and expenditure reporting and continually deliver the expectations the Town and the community.
"The focus for the next three years is continue to provide for the asset management and day to day operations of the facilities, and to adopt a more collaborative approach to reporting and improving the commercial viability of the leisure facilities.”
YMCA WA Pilbara General Manager Stephanie Greene said the YMCA were pleased to continue its relationship with the Town of Port Hedland.
Greene added “the YMCA will continue to engage our community, in particular our youth and sporting organisations and to encourage greater participation in health and wellness initiatives, along with the introduction of new innovative and diverse fitness programs with local complementary service providers.
“We have looked at our peak times for our facilities and what is the optimum operating times. There will be a reduction in winter opening hours of some of the facilities such as during the day at South Hedland Aquatic Centre.”
At its March 2016 meeting, the Council committed to consider more than $170,000 in capital expenditure as part of its 2016/17 budget deliberations, for works including redesign of gym and group fitness space at Wanangkura Stadium, repair of air-conditioning, increased lighting at the stadium and repainting of the Aqua Tower at South Hedland Aquatic Facility.
