AUSactive calls on member and community support for inclusion of Yoga Therapy under the NDIS

AUSactive calls on member and community support for inclusion of Yoga Therapy under the NDIS
August 15, 2024

The current draft categorisation of Yoga Therapy in the list of NDIS Supports states it is “not value for money/effective or beneficial”. AUSactive, as part of its commitment to advocating for inclusive health and wellbeing for all abilities, is calling on members and the broader community to have their say on the Australian Department of Social Services’ draft list of NDIS Supports before consultation closes this Sunday 18th August 2024.

AUSactive Chief Executive Barrie Elvish said the association strongly opposed the current draft categorisation that Yoga Therapy is “not value for money/effective or beneficial”.

Elvish notes “AUSactive strongly opposes the current categorisation of Yoga Therapy in the draft list of NDIS Supports. Research demonstrates the benefits of Yoga Therapy in supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals with disabilities.

“This practice is not merely physical, it also addresses the psychological challenges faced by this community, including the management of anxiety, which disproportionately affects people with a disability.

Elvish said by voicing collective support for the inclusion of Yoga Therapy under the NDIS it can help ensure it becomes a recognised and funded support.

“Recognising Yoga Therapy as a NDIS-funded support will lead to an enhanced quality of life for NDIS participants and contribute to a more cost-effective health and disability support system overall,” Elvish added.

The survey, accessible here, closes on Sunday 18th August 2024, and represents a critical opportunity to voice the value that yoga therapy brings to people with a disability.
