AusCycling Chair confirms intention to stand aside and succession plan

AusCycling Chair confirms intention to stand aside and succession plan
September 21, 2021

AusCycling Chair Duncan Murray has reaffirmed his intention to stand aside from the role in November.

Having led Cycling Australia prior to playing a key role in the formation of AusCycling, Murray agreed to serve as Chair of the new organisation for its first 12 months.

The commitment was designed to ensure that his successor - to be drawn from outside the merged entities - inherited a stable and focused organisation poised for significant growth.

Confirming the move in a statement released today, Murray stated "I’m enormously proud of AusCycling. Its creation wasn’t easy, but for the first time in Australia, cycling in all its forms, from families to commuters and competitors, from the grassroots to the Olympics, can finally fulfil its potential.

"It’s good already, and in due course, it will be great.”

AusCycling was formed in 2020 from 18 existing federated cycling bodies, including Cycling Australia, BMX Australia and Mountain Bike Australia. It represents all forms of cycling, including BMX, Mountain Bike, Road, Track, Para, Cyclo-cross, virtual and recreational.

It is responsible for running Australia’s high performance programs, supporting more than 450 cycling clubs and 55,000 members, and advocating on behalf of all Australians who ride bicycles.

Paying tribute to Murray, saying he had provided invaluable support and counsel as Chair, AusCycling Chief Executive, Marne Fechner stated ‘iIt was always the plan for Duncan to stay for the first 12 months, and together with the Board, he has provided exactly the clarity and direction that such a young entity needs.

"I thank Duncan on behalf of all cyclists, and on a personal note, for the support, advice and encouragement that he has provided to me in my first year as CEO."

Details on the process to recruit AusCycling’s next Chair will be released in the next week.
