A significant investment has been made by Barossa Council in the future of recreation and sport with a $1.6 million land purchase at Lyndoch.

The purchase of land from Burge Family Winemakers will enable the future expansion of sporting facilities adjacent Lyndoch Recreation Park, including a full size second oval, netball courts, changerooms and office and canteen facilities, subject to funding.

Barossa Mayor Bim Lange says the $1.6 million land purchase will future-proof sports and recreation in our southern communities and enthused “we’ve been consistently working towards this goal for many years. We are absolutely thrilled to make this acquisition facilitated by Burge Family Winemakers, and we thank them for being open to supporting our community and future generations.

“This is a great outcome for our grassroots sports including football, netball, cricket, tennis, bowls, athletics and pigeon racing, and moves us closer to realising our long-held vision for a Barossa sporting hub in Lyndoch, which will benefit adjoining communities.

“The land purchase not only supports the relocation of Barossa District Football and Netball Club to Lyndoch, but also caters for future population growth resulting from the Concordia development.

“Additionally, it will provide year-round access for athletics, tennis and netball who have had shared-use arrangements of facilities at Lyndoch Recreation Park.”

The new facilities will complement those in Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston, making the Barossa a genuine destination for sports and tourism events, in line with Council’s delivery of The Big Project.

This will create new and exciting opportunities to attract major sports tourism events to the region by providing high-quality facilities within easy reach of Adelaide.

Mayor Lange added “It also opens up new opportunities for investment at Queen Victoria Jubilee Park in Williamstown as an adventure and tourism destination.

“This land purchase is a long-term investment in the future of our region and we look forward to the opportunities it will create through increased participation in sport and as an economic driver for our region.

The land purchase was made official at a signing ceremony performed by Mayor Lange and Kirk Zeng representing Burge Family Winemakers.
