Bass Coast Council introduces fair access sports policy

Bass Coast Council introduces fair access sports policy
March 20, 2024

Bass Coast Shire Council says a fairer access policy for community sports facilities is set to enhance equity, eliminating barriers that prevent girls, women and gender diverse people from taking up sport and staying physically active.

The Council says the Draft Fair Access Policy and Draft Action Plan promotes equal access and use of community sports facilities, for all people, in Bass Coast.

Advising that the draft policy sets out what the Council and clubs can do to ensure they create an environment that is safe and inclusive, from their volunteers to their playing group and leaders, Bass Coast Mayor, Clare Le Serve explained that as strong advocates for gender equality, the Council believes everyone should have access to the same level of training, game times, facilities, coaching and leadership opportunities, she said.

Mayor Le Serve noted “together, we can break down barriers, create equal opportunities, and build a stronger sense of unity within our sporting community.

“For Council, equality is not a negotiable notion, and removing the barriers that prevent girls and women from taking up different sports means that they will form better connections with the community and grassroots clubs and sports will continue to grow.

“This policy is for all people, not just women, as everyone has a right to feel welcome and included, taking part in sporting activities free from discrimination or prejudice.

“The benefits of physical exercise and being part of a team is something everyone should get to experience.”

The Fair Access Policy also calls for women to be equally represented at a leadership and governance level within community sports clubs.

Mayor Le Serve added that the Council was a leader in gender equality, becoming the first council in Victoria to demand the same prize money for men and women for all sporting competitions held at council owned or managed facilities in the region.

The Council wants to hear from people to ensure the Fair Access Policy and Action Plan meets the needs and expectations of the local community. Information sessions will be held both in person and online.
