read moreThe tragic incident at a Bondi Junction shopping centre yesterday afternoon has led to the closure of fitness clubs and studios in the area while NSW Police investigate the crime.
A man, reported to be Queensland man Joel Cauchi, stabbed six people to death, five of them women, in a knife rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction that has shocked the nation. Several others were injured, including a nine-month old baby.
The murderous attack ended when Cauchi was shot and killed by a NSW Police officer.
Two French construction workers - Damien Guerot and Silas Despreaux - who were filmed attempting to stop Cauchi’s murderous rampage were on route to work out at the Fitness First Bondi Platinum facility.
It, like all outlets in Westfield Bondi Junction, remains closed as authorities investigating the incident comb the mall for evidence.
With the Bondi Junction area the home to a large number of fitness clubs and studios, other locations are also currently closed.
From a variety of footage shared on social media, Westfield management was quick to respond to the emergency. Alarms sounded and digital advertising boards displayed messages urging people to evacuate the centre as the attacker progressed through the centre on multiple floors.
Elliott Rusanow, Chief Executive of Westfield Bondi Junction’s parent Scentre Group, issued a statement extending the company’s “deepest and most heartfelt condolences” to the families and loved ones of those impacted by the tragedy.
Also expressing “deep appreciation for the swift and brave action” of Westfield Bondi Junction’s team and first responders, he went on to say "our team continues to provide full assistance to the NSW emergency services response.”
Mall staff were also working with police on Sunday to help customers and workers who evacuated the centre to retrieve personal belongings and their vehicles.
As of 11pm on 14th April, Westfield Bondi Junction remains closed until further notice and NSW Police have barricaded the area surrounding the shopping centre.
