read moreWorld Ranger Day was celebrated yesterday on Sunday 31st July marking the work of rangers as the key protectors of parks and conservation.
‘Diversity’ was selected by the International Ranger Federation and their partners as the theme for World Ranger Day 2022. It is an all-encompassing theme which is a connecting factor for so many Rangers around the world. While diversity can create complexities, it also drives rangers to be inquisitive, resourceful, and determined.
The role of a ranger has broadened over the years with Christchurch City Council’s new Community Partnerships Ranger Annaliese Potter advising “it’s very community-focussed – we work with volunteers all over the city that are doing great things to support biodiversity in the city. There’s a great sense of wellbeing and it’s definitely not a male-dominated space anymore.”
The Council’s Community Parks Ranger team is made up largely of women (wahine toa), with Potter stating "it’s especially great for young people to see that women can do anything and everything. It’s really important to have that diversity on the ground,” she says.
While the job does involve lots of clearing weeds, planting and putting in signs – it also involves talking to groups, working with schools and helping community shape their green spaces with Potter adding “It’s a really positive space we work in, you form great friendships and have a special kind of synergy with the community. Our parks are for our people so if the work isn’t community-led it’s kind of pointless.”
The Christchurch City Council park ranger team marked World Ranger Day with a special event out at Bottle Lake Forest.
Parks Victoria believe that diversity enriches their organisation with Parks Victoria’s Rangers coming from all walks of life. Not only do they support and serve diverse communities and visitors, their rangers also care for a huge variety of plants, animals and landscapes.
The complex problems Parks Victoria’s Rangers face can be solved with the unique skills, ideas and experiences they bring to work each day.
Parks Victoria Ranger Andy Davies (pictured above) is passionate about the global community of Rangers, who are united by their work to protect and preserve all aspects of wild places, historic and cultural sites.
In almost 30 years of working and volunteering in protected area management, Davies has spent 18 years working with First Nations Peoples in Northern Australia, escorted royalty on a private tour at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and has worked with crocodile management in Kakadu National Park.
Parks Victoria advises “Andy’s career has been a wild ride shaped by his desire to fly planes, bushwalking and connecting people with parks for recreation – while protecting special places.”
Currently the District Manager, South Gippsland at Parks Victoria, his most recent honour is being elected Director and Company Secretary of the International Ranger Federation in 2019.
Working with and leading many teams of diverse colleagues, he is proud of the diverse people, communities and landscapes he has contributed to.
