Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū – Banks Peninsula Community Board approved the installation in December 2019, amending the master plan for the domain.
The new apparatus, which allows for a range of fitness activities, will be in place by February.
The installation follows requests from local residents seeking additional fitness activities.
Board Chairperson Tori Peden advises the new “outdoor gym” in Awa-iti Domain will help meet the growing demand for improved health and well-being options in the local district.
Peden notes “having such diverse fitness stations in place will hopefully also motivate people with a range of fitness goals to regularly use the equipment.
“By investing in an outdoor gym, we believe anyone can make the most of low-impact exercise opportunities that are economical and easy to use and access.
“This will further support the fitness groups already in place and help more people connect with friends in a great environment.”
The wooden apparatus includes a stepper, hurdles, a balance beam, stepping logs and a straddle jump sited in a corner of the domain near the fire station.
The different apparatus caters to multiple fitness levels, providing residents and visitors with various options to improve their health. The new equipment also complements the facilities at one of the area’s most popular recreation and sport sites.
The domain, which sits next to Little River School, already includes several sports fields, a community centre and rugby clubrooms.
Work is also under way to restore the damaged tennis courts in the domain in tandem with the fitness stations installation. The domain will remain open during the installation work.
