Construction begins on exterior of Gold Coast’s new HOTA gallery

Construction begins on exterior of Gold Coast’s new HOTA gallery
June 4, 2020

The Gold Coast's newest landmark has been revealed with a first look at the striking building facade adorning the $60.5 million HOTA gallery.

Advising that the building’s unique design would attract locals and visitors alike, City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate advised “the distinctive colouring of the façade is reflective of the city’s sub-tropical environment, and will be beautifully comprised of a mixture of glass and aluminium panels.

“There is no doubt in my mind that this gallery will take its place in Australia’s artistic and cultural landscape as a must-see destination.

“We’ve recently completed the $19.5 million Green Bridge connecting HOTA to Chevron Island, so the gallery and broader cultural precinct is even more accessible to the community.

“I’m pleased to say that construction of the gallery is on time and on budget for a 2021 public opening.”

Part of the Masterplan vision for the evolution of the cultural precinct, the gallery comprises six storeys, and will offer guests an accessible rooftop with 270 degree views of the city skyline and landscape. A ground floor café and foyer will offer views across the amphitheatre to the Outdoor Stage.

It provides 2000 metre² of gallery exhibition space including a 1000 metre² exhibition hall for touring international exhibitions.

The gallery is AAA-rated, a universal standard for art galleries and museums which meet stringent design, build, mechanical and technical requirements.

The gallery’s facade is being installed by local Gold Coast based company Cladding Creations.

HOTA, Home of the Arts has announced it will commission up to 20 Gold Coast artists to create a suite of new work for a major exhibition to be presented in the new HOTA Gallery in 2021.

With local artists at the heart of HOTA, the arts and culture hub is fast-tracking the next stage of support for Gold Coast artists following its well-received ‘Rage Against the V(irus)’ quick fire artist fund, with a new commissioning opportunity that will see selected artists receive $5,000 to create a body of work for an exhibition.

Advising that the callout was a unique opportunity for Gold Coast artists, HOTA Chief Executive, Criena Gehrke stated “now more than ever, we have a deep responsibility to support Gold Coast artists. We have fast-tracked this $100,000 commissioning opportunity for up to 20 artists to create new works for the inaugural HOTA Gallery program in 2021.

“We have huge talent in our community and to highlight their work in this incredible gallery pays homage to that. Artists are at the core of our vision; without artists there is no home of the arts.”

Currently under construction within the HOTA parklands, the new $60.5 million HOTA Gallery will be the largest gallery outside a capital city in Australia and is seen as a major economic stimulator for the city.

HOTA Gallery will become the permanent home for the $32 million City Collection, whilst presenting international exhibitions exclusive to Australia alongside an ongoing commitment to present the work of local artists.
