read morePort Hedland's Gratwick Aquatic Centre will remain closed until 2019 for further maintenance works, following a critical failure in the pool’s filters.
The Town of Port Hedland has advised that during testing of the pools filtration system last week, the pressurised sand filter vessels failed. The facility cannot open to the public without this function, as it provides safe and clean water to patrons. In particular, contaminants are removed from the water which may pose harm to human health.
Mayor Camilo Blanco acknowledged the inconvenience of this development, vowed to work with facility manager the YMCA WA to prioritise resolving the issue.
Mayor Blanco advised “we acknowledge that it’s not the best timing with our weather heating up, however, the Council is committed to public health and safety, and for this reason we won’t be opening the Gratwick Aquatic Centre until 2019.
“South Hedland Aquatic Centre will remain open during the summer and winter months.
“We also anticipate the reopening of Marquee Park in the next month, so that will present another option for kids and families over summer.”
Ann Marie Kelly, YMCA WA General Manager - Pilbara, added “our dedicated team, who work across Wanangkura Stadium and South Hedland Aquatic Centre, are working hard to create alternative programs at the SHAC, as we recognise the impact the closure of Gratwick will have on the community and we’re doing all we can to minimise the inconvenience.”
