read moreThe 130-year-old West Perth Football Club played their first home game of the WAFL 2024 season on Thursday under brand new lighting thanks to a $1.9 million investment.
Four new lighting towers were lifted into position in March before the headframes and luminaries were added, giving the oval at HBF Arena in Joondalup over 500 lux. This allows for television broadcast standards and the ability to host night fixtures, enhancing the sporting experience for both fans and players.
The improved lighting also enables the clubs and all associated age grades that use the space to use the facilities after dark, easing fixturing challenges.
Welcoming the new lighting poles West Perth Football Club, Chief Executive, Joe McCarthy commented “West Perth continues to build its legacy working alongside VenuesWest. The new light towers stand strong and create a night environment that sets us apart from all other clubs. It is a huge step forward for our club and we are appreciative of VenuesWest and the investment they provide into the facility.”
The replacement of the towers with four new light poles with a 10 years life cycle was approved by the Western Australian Government in December 2022 with the subsequent design and procurement of the project accelerated by VenuesWest to ensure the lights could be commissioned before the WAFL season opener.
VenuesWest Chief Executive, David Etherton noted that “these new lights provide a great opportunity for the West Perth Football Club to host exciting nighttime fixtures” and that VenuesWest will “continue to work with our key partners such as West Perth to support high performance sport and deliver world class experiences.”
Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister, David Templeman added “last year HBF Arena welcomed over 1.4 million visitors, these upgrades to the West Perth Football Club help ensure a high quality experience for these visitors.
The ability to host high quality nighttime matches will also provide an avenue for increased patronage at the venue.”
