IOA partners with SWIM to launch aquaphobia program across Southern Hemisphere

IOA partners with SWIM to launch aquaphobia program across Southern Hemisphere
December 10, 2024

The Institute of Aquaphobia (IOA) has announced a significant partnership with SWIM Coaches and Teachers Australia (SWIM/SCTA) to expand access to resources and training aimed at addressing aquaphobia.

While the IOA and SWIM have worked together for some time, this partnership will enhance the reach of the program, empowering swim teachers and providing vital support to the aquatic community.

Announcing the partnership, IOA Founder Mike Burman stated “SWIM is an ideal partner for us. They share our values and are highly respected throughout Australia.

“In recent years, Australia has seen an influx of immigrants from regions where swimming is not culturally or socially prevalent, often due to limited access or religious and social factors. This has created a pressing need to address aquatic fear in these communities.”

The IOA Aquaphobia Program is designed to provide compassionate and tailored support to individuals who feel afraid of water, whether in pools or the ocean. By equipping swim teachers with specialised training, the program aims to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for overcoming aquatic fears.

As part of the initiative, the IOA team will offer ongoing student support and additional teaching resources to ensure the success of the program.

Burman added “we’ve been impressed by how positively swim teachers in this part of the world have embraced this program. Their willingness to adopt innovative techniques for teaching individuals with aquatic fears has been truly inspiring.”

Expressing enthusiasm for the program, SWIM Chief Executive, Brendon Ward commented “this partnership reflects our shared commitment to addressing a critical need in our industry. Providing education for swim teachers and aquatic professionals to help people struggling with aquatic fears is both a responsibility and an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.”

This initiative signifies a leap forward in tackling aquaphobia while promoting water safety and inclusivity across the Southern Hemisphere.
