The Western Australian Government has announced the appointment of Lanie Chopping as the permanent Director General of its Department Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

Chopping, who has been interim Director General of the Department since May last year has more than a decade of experience in the public sector.

Most recently, she was Commissioner for Consumer Protection in Western Australia at the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS), and as the Deputy Director General, Public Sector Reform at the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

She is also currently serving as the Commissioner for Legal Aid WA.

Prior to joining the public sector, Chopping (pictured) was the Assistant Director at the Economic Regulation Authority.

Since joining the DLGSC in May 2021, she has been acknowledged for overseeing some significant achievements at the Department. This includes a new organisational structure and leadership team to deliver on key Western Australian Government priorities, including driving reform for local government regulation, and strategic planning and restructuring to address findings arising from the Perth Casino Royal Commission.

Announcing the appointment, Western Australian Culture and the Arts and Sport and Recreation Minister, David Templeman “stated "Ms Chopping brings her significant leadership and public sector experience from her previous positions at DMIRS and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

"I look forward to continuing to work with Ms Chopping in the Culture and the Arts and Sport and Recreation portfolios."
