read moreBurdekin Shire Council in North Queensland has awarded the contract for the design and construction of a $2.5 million all-abilities aquatic play park to Playscape Creations.
Announced just before Christmas following agreement at its final Ordinary Council Meeting of 2021, the new attraction will be situated inside the Council’s Ayr Swimming Pool Complex (Burdekin Aquatic Centre).
Advising that the award of the contract was a milestone that would not be forgotten, Burdekin Shire Mayor, Lyn McLaughlin stated “councils often talk about legacy projects, ones which will forever change a community for the better, and the Burdekin Water Park will certainly be a lasting legacy that the Burdekin community can be proud of.
“The Burdekin Water Park has been in the strategic planning stage for several years along with the Ayr Swimming Pool Complex and Anzac Park, with two rounds of community consultation confirming this project is a priority for locals.
“I want to thank all three shortlisted tenderers for presenting three incredibly different and equally exciting designs for Council’s consideration, and congratulate Playscape Creations for being awarded the contract for its design and construction.
“Council Officers will work with Playscape Creations over the coming months as detailed designs are finalised, before construction of the Burdekin Water Park itself begins in the second half of 2022.
“$2.48 million of this $2.53 million project will be funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program, while the remaining funds have been budgeted for in Council’s capital works program. I want to thank the Queensland Government for their support of this project that every member of our community can call their own.”
Detailed designs of the Burdekin Water Park will be finalised in the coming months before construction commences in the second half of the year.
The facility is expected to open at the start of 2023.
