Polytan awarded construction tender for Surf Coast’s new hockey field

Polytan awarded construction tender for Surf Coast’s new hockey field
March 27, 2025

Surf Coast Shire Council has advised that leading surface supplier Polytan has been awarded the construction tender for Torquay’s much-anticipated Banyul-Warri Fields hockey pitch.

Polytan is a preferred supplier with the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) and has constructed and installed hockey pitches at the highest level including Olympic Games venues while also delivering important suburban and regional hockey centres across Australia.

The Banyul-Warri Fields hockey pitch will boast Polytan’s state-of-the-art, eco-friendly Poligras Paris GT hockey system, one of only two in Australia.

Polytan's Poligras Paris GT zero, is the world’s first carbon-neutral synthetic turf for field hockey. It is 100% climate-neutral, without compromising on playing characteristics. This is made possible by a combination of different measures including a new manufacturing process and the use of sustainably farmed, organically based synthetic materials. The surface was developed specially for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Polytan advises "a major component in maximising the sustainability of Poligras Paris GT zero is the permanently improved product design, which consumes less water than before. For example, the synthetic turf used in the Olympic Games in Tokyo consumed 39% less water than the turf used in Rio only four years earlier. Polytan Paris GT zero takes this development even further with the introduction of Turf Glide, a new, patent-protected technology that reduces surface friction, so that even less water is needed to reduce the friction resistance and minimise the risk of injury."

The Banyul-Warri Fields hockey pitch project will deliver a new hockey pitch, lighting, scoreboard and spectator seating, along with a new car park giving more players, fans and families access to the sport they love, closer to home.

The venue will be home to the Torquay Hockey Club, which is excited to welcome a local facility to play and train on.

The Banyul-Warri Fields project is more than just a new pitch - it’s about creating a vibrant home for hockey, where athletes of all ages can train, compete, and celebrate the sport they love. This investment will not only grow the game locally but also position the region as a destination for top-level sporting events

Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor Mike Bodsworth enthused “Local excitement continues to build for this awesome new facility, particularly from Torquay Tornadoes Hockey Club who advocated for the pitch over many years.

“We’re proud to team up with the Victorian Government to deliver another important project in the Banyul-Warri Fields sporting precinct.”

Construction works on the pitch are anticipated to be complete by mid-2026.
