read moreThe NBL’s Perth Wildcats could be forced to play a key game away from its regular home at Western Australia’s RAC Arena next week due to a scheduling clash with a Kylie Minogue concert.
In what could be a first in Australian basketball history, 10-time champions the Wildcats could miss playing their finals game at their regular venue.
The Wildcats, who are currently placed third in NBL, can feature in a home final next week if they maintain their third spot or placed fifth after their regular season match against Adelaide 36ers at RAC Arena on Friday this week.
With the concert happening on 15th February and the venue hosting gigs by rapper Drake this week and a Bryan Adams concert on Sunday followed by Minogue taking over for a week, the most successful side in NBL history could be forced to play their home final games at the much smaller capacity Perth High Performance Centre (Perth HPC) on Tuesday next week.
The Wildcats noted that the team’s last four home games have attracted an aggregate attendance of nearly 52,500 while it list 10,837 members.
With the Perth HPC having a seated capacity of just 4,000, more than half of these would miss out on a ticket if the play-in game was relocated.
Wildcats owner Mark Arena told The West Australian “I’m super disappointed and angry.
“We are an anchor tenant at RAC Arena and are having to play at a sub-par venue as a result.
“I’m really frustrated with RAC Arena given they have booked such a big period of time during our finals series. They should not have booked this period time for a booking anywhere during this finals series.”
The RAC Arena, which is owned by Western Australia Government, was opened in 2012 and has the Wildcats and netball team West Coast Fever as its major tenants.
