Tasmanian aquatic venues secure Royal Life Saving 5-star safety ratings

Tasmanian aquatic venues secure Royal Life Saving 5-star safety ratings
June 3, 2024

In a first for Tasmania, the Smithton Wellbeing Indoor Recreation and Leisure (SWIRL) and the Splash Devonport Aquatic and Leisure Centre have earned the state’s inaugural 5-star safety ratings from Royal Life Saving Society - Australia.

These top ratings, awarded after a rigorous 40-point safety check, highlight both venues’ commitment to ensuring a fun and secure environment for all.

Royal Life Saving conducted Aquatic Facility Safety Assessments at both SWIRL and Splash, evaluating adherence to the stringent safety guidelines sourced from its Guidelines for Safe Pool Operation (GSPO).

Commenting on the process, a Royal Life Saving representative advised “both SWIRL and Splash are the only pools with our 5-star rating and excellent models of aquatic safety.

"These venues have demonstrated unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and operational excellence."

This achievement shows the dedication of both venues to not only meet but exceed industry safety standards, ensuring a secure environment for members and guests.

Proud of this milestone, SWIRL Venue Manager, Samer Kamal stated "at SWIRL, safety has always been our top priority. Receiving this 5-star rating reaffirms our dedication to providing a secure environment for our community members to enjoy aquatic activities in a safe way.”

Andrew Towns, Venue Manager of Splash and Belgravia Leisure’s Area Manager in Tasmania, echoed these sentiments, noting "we are honoured to be recognised as a leader in aquatic safety. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our team to uphold the highest standards of safety and service”.

In partnership with Circular Head Council and Devonport City Council, these venues remain committed to fostering safe and enjoyable aquatic experiences for all community members.

Mayor Alison Jarman from Devonport City Council and Mayor Gerard Blizzard form Circular Head Council both expressed their support for SWIRL and Splash’s achievements, emphasising the importance of collaboration in maintaining safe and accessible recreational facilities for the community.

Karina Siggins, Manager of Royal Life Saving Tasmania also congratulated staff at the facilities on gaining their 5-star rating.
