VMA advises of successful completion of 2024 Venue Management School and Leadership Institute
November 15, 2024

The Venue Management Association (VMA) has advised of the successful completion of its Venue Management School and Leadership Institute, marking the 29th Edition of these landmark programs for the venue management industry.

This year’s educational programs saw a record turnout, with 119 participants enrolling across all year levels.

Of these, 66 students graduated, adding to the growing community of venue management professionals who have benefitted from the school’s immersive learning experiences.

Commenting on how the programs enhance professional growth, VMS Chair, Dean Hassall CVE stated “we’re incredibly proud of this year’s graduates, and it’s exciting to see the impact that the Venue Management School continues to have in shaping the future of our industry.

“Each year, the program grows stronger, and this year was no exception, with students bringing new energy and fresh perspectives to the table.”

The Venue Management School (VMS) provides a unique, hands-on learning experience that covers 35 essential topics tailored to the venue management industry. As the only industry-run school of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, it continues to be a vital resource for venue professionals. Since its launch, over 1,100 students have graduated from the program, helping to elevate the standards of the industry.

Alongside the VMS, the Leadership Institute (LI) provides senior managers and executives with the leadership development they need to excel in the venue management world.

Since its inception in 2014, the LI has helped transform talented managers into the type of leaders who inspire teams and make a lasting impact. This year, the LI welcomed 19 participants from across Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

LI Chair, Andrew Travis noted “our Leadership Institute continues to provide invaluable learning experiences for those looking to make a real difference as leaders in the venue management sector.

“The focus on developing both the skills and mindset of leadership is essential, especially in such a dynamic industry.”

With the guidance of 23 industry-leading instructors from Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, students had the opportunity to learn from the best in the business, enhance their skills, and form connections that will benefit them throughout their careers.

This year’s cohort represented over 50 venues and organisations, with students traveling from all corners of Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the USA. The diverse group shared insights and experiences, further enriching the school’s learning environment.

The week culminated with a memorable Graduation Dinner for Year 2 and LI students, where VMA President Phil King AVM announced the conclusion of Dean Hassall’s CVE tenure as VMS Chair. Reflecting on Hassall’s leadership, King remarked, “Dean has been a cornerstone of VMS for over two decades, and his contribution to the school and the wider venue management industry cannot be overstated. His passion for advancing the profession has shaped the careers of countless individuals.”

Hassall has been an integral part of the VMS community since 2002, serving as a lecturer, committee member and Chair.

His commitment to excellence has earned him several accolades, including the Certified Venue Executive (CVE) accreditation and the Allied Member of the Year Award in 2011. He is also an instructor at the International Association of Venue Managers’ (IAVM) Venue Management School in the USA, continuing his global contribution to the profession.

Hassall commented “being part of the VMS community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

“I’ve had the privilege of watching so many talented individuals grow and achieve great things, and I’m proud to have played a part in that. I’m excited to see what the future holds for VMS and the venue management industry as a whole.”
