Western Australian sport unites to oppose domestic violence for the 16 Days in new campaign
November 28, 2024

SportWest, the peak body for sport in Western Australia, has announced that it is joining with the Western Australian Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Department of Communities, athletes, coaches and representatives from the state’s sporting community to support the 16 Days in WA campaign.

Running from 25th November 2024 to 10th December 2024, the 16 Days in WA campaign aligns with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. SportWest aims to use the power of sport to inspire change, challenge harmful stereotypes, and help create safer and more supportive communities for all.

Advising that the initiative calls for collective action against domestic violence, raising awareness and encouraging conversations about this critical issue, SportWest Chief Executive, Troy Kirkham stated “sport has the power to unite communities and drive social change. By standing together, we can send a strong message that domestic violence has no place in our society.

“Through initiatives like the 16 Days in WA campaign, we not only raise awareness but also create a platform for conversations that challenge harmful behaviours. We are proud to support this campaign and encourage everyone, whether they are involved in sport or not, to join us in this important cause.”

SportWest recognises that community sport plays a pivotal role in shaping cultural attitudes, fostering inclusion, and promoting respect. As a platform that brings people together from diverse backgrounds and ages, sport has a unique opportunity to influence societal norms and set a positive example when it comes to addressing issues like domestic violence. By engaging athletes, clubs, and fans, sport can spark meaningful conversations that drive social change and advocate for healthier relationships, both on and off the field.

SportWest encourages all members of the state’s sporting community, athletes, coaches, administrators, and supporters, to get involved in the 16 Days in WA campaign. Whether through participating in activities, sharing awareness messages on social media, or simply starting conversations with friends and family, everyone has a role to play in the fight against domestic violence.

Kirkham added “we know that change starts with conversation, and sport is the perfect platform for these conversations to take place. By working together, we can create a culture of respect and understanding that empowers individuals to speak out, seek help. Join us in this crucial campaign and be part of a movement that can change lives.”
