read moreA woman in her 20s is reportedly in a critical condition after being struck by a rollercoaster carriage at the Melbourne Royal Show this afternoon.
Reports indicate that the woman was attempting to retrieve a dropped mobile phone from the ride area when she was struck by a carriage from the Rebel Coaster at around 5.45pm today.
The scenario for the incident was suggested by a Victoria Police spokesperson who said officers were still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The spokesperson advised “sadly the woman was then found injured on the ground.”
A subsequent statement from Show organisers advised “we are working closely with the ride operator, WorkSafe Victoria and Victoria Police to investigate the issue further; however, we can confirm that no one has fallen from the ride.”
However, organisers advised that the ride has been closed for the foreseeable future.
Vision from the scene taken after the incident appears to show staff helping riders from the rollercoaster that appears to have been stopped mid ride.
The injured woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she is reportedly in a critical condition.
The accident happened on the fourth day of the Royal Melbourne Show which has been sold out after a two-year COVID-induced hiatus.
