Works complete on new playground at Townsville’s Bluewater Park
May 12, 2022

Children can now enjoy a new state-of-the-art playground at Bluewater Park after Townsville City Council completed upgrades to the open space.

The modern playground features two climbing towers, a flying fox, climbing ropes, swings, soft-fall flooring, three slides and a carousel.

Welcoming the completion of the upgrade project, Townsville Mayor, Jenny Hill advised last week "this playground upgrade is the result of close consultation between Council and the community about what they wanted to see in the park

“Bluewater Park is a popular day spot and rest area for residents and visitors, and the right infrastructure must be in place to meet users' needs.

“This is one of the 320 parks and open spaces Council looks after, and we know how important they are for helping residents maintain a healthy and active lifestyle and helping children with their development.

“Through the Have Your Say surveys and one-to-one consultations, Council has been able to deliver a playground that suits the needs of nearby residents and visitors to the park.”

As part of further works at the site, Council has also upgraded the irrigation system at Bluewater Oval.

Council Infrastructure Services Committee Chairperson Kurt Rehbein said this would help Council keep the sports ground green and well maintained, adding "close to 3.5 kilometres of irrigation piping and several ground moisture sensors have been installed at the oval.

“Bluewater Oval has a wide range of uses for anything from markets, shows, and sporting events to being used by emergency services, including a space to land a helicopter.”

Townsville Council received $247,000 to install the new playground and $343,000 to upgrade the oval’s irrigation system from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
