read moreThe Fremantle Theatre Company FTC), a cornerstone of Fremantle’s arts community, has announced that it will cease operations following the conclusion of its lease at Victoria Hall at the end of this month.
After five years of producing compelling theatrical works and fostering artistic talent, FTC said it has reached the difficult decision that continuing operations is no longer sustainable.
Explaining that, as an independent arts organisation, the challenges of maintaining a venue and producing high-quality performances without core funding have led to this decision, FTC Chairperson, Kay Gerard advised “this is an emotional moment for all of us.
“While we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved, the financial and operational realities of running an independent theatre company in the current landscape have made it increasingly difficult to continue.”
Artistic Director Renato Fabretti echoed this sentiment, stating “FTC has always been driven by passion and a love for storytelling. We are immensely grateful to our artists, loyal audiences, and donors and sponsors who have made this journey so special.
“While this chapter is closing, the creative spirit that FTC has fostered will live on in the incredible talent that has graced our stage.”
The decision to close reflects broader challenges facing the arts sector, particularly for independent theatre companies navigating increasing financial pressures. Despite these obstacles, FTC has made a lasting impact on the Western Australian arts landscape, providing a platform for bold, original storytelling and championing local artists.
Gerard added “we extend our thanks to the City of Fremantle for providing us with a creative home.
“Our deepest gratitude also goes to the talented artists, dedicated staff, and loyal audiences who have supported FTC over the years.
“Special thanks goes to our sponsors and donors who have been so supportive and to all board members, past and present. It has been an extraordinary journey, and we cherish the memories we’ve created together.”
FTC remains hopeful that the passion and creativity it has nurtured will continue to thrive in new and unexpected ways throughout the community.
