Early winter snowfalls prompt early opening at Victoria’s Mt Buller

Early winter snowfalls prompt early opening at Victoria’s Mt Buller
June 1, 2022

Heavy snowfalls in Victoria's alpine region ahead of the scheduled ski season opening on 11th June have prompted Mt Buller to announce that its ski fields and lifts will open a week early.

With Australia’s alpine regions having recorded heavy snowfalls over recent days, Mt Buller will open as of Saturday 4th June.

35cms of snow has blanketed the resort since Monday and the forecast has predicted more snow expected, especially into this weekend.

As a result, Rhylla Morgan, Head of PR and Communications for Buller Ski Lifts, announced today that “thanks to the efforts of the snowmaking team and mother nature’s gifts a limited number of lifts will turn this Saturday and the Village Toboggan park will be open for sliding on Saturday and Sunday.”

The early season opening will see skiing and snowboarding on Mt Buller’s Bourke Street as of Saturday morning with resort entry and car permits operational from Friday evening.

As a result, access to the village for non-permitted cars ends as of midday on Friday 3rd June.

Welcoming the snowfalls, Morgan added “(it’s the) first day of winter and we’ve got 20cm blanketing the resort.

“We’re certainly very hopeful for a good season. We intend to ski into October this year.”

The Perisher ski resort has also announced that it will open as of Saturday, following reported falls of 30 centimetres in the past 24 hours.

Snow is continuing to fall in across the Alpine region today.
