Northern Territory post COVID tourism recovery on track

Northern Territory post COVID tourism recovery on track
December 23, 2022

The Northern Territory Government’s continued investment in attractions and experiences with compelling campaigns to highlight the Territory’s unique offerings has resulted in tourists staying longer and spending more.

The latest visitor numbers highlight that for the year ending September 2022, visitor expenditure exceeded $2.6 billion with average spend per trip and average length of stay surging past pre-pandemic levels.

There were 1.46 million visitors reported for the NT in the year ending September 2022, a 9% increase compared to the year ending September 2021, with 33% growth from interstate markets.

Interstate holiday visitation is up by 4% and Territorians travelling within the Territory for holiday purposes up by 21%.

Airport Development Group Executive General Manager Property and Terminal, Ross Baynes notes “as owners and operators of Darwin International Airport and the Mercure and Novotel Hotels, Airport Development Group is confident the tourism industry in the NT will flourish as we recover from the Covid pandemic.

“That is why we are making significant investments to support the growth of this vital industry – terminal upgrades will provide new check in and bag drop facilities, along with new aerobridges, and our hotels are being transformed into a single world class resort that will meet the needs of any traveller.”

“These works will be all completed before the start of the 2023 tourist season and forward bookings are showing it will be a bumper year.”
