read moreProfessionals working in aquatic and recreation facilities across Australia are being encouraged to participate in a vital survey exploring diversity, equity and inclusion across the industry.
The research project, led by Swinburne’s Sport Innovation Research Group is being undertaken to assess the current state of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the industry, identifying existing challenges and informing an evidence-based framework to improve practices.
The survey, which forms part of a larger initiative supported by VicHealth, Royal Life Saving Society - Australia and AUSTSWIM targets key DEI areas, including representation of First Nations people, the LGBTIQA+ community, multicultural / culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations, gender equity, and accessibility for people with disabilities.
Insights gathered will contribute to a comprehensive DEI framework to help aquatic and leisure facilities nationwide enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and safety for all community members.
Dr Carleigh Yeomans, leading researcher from Swinburne University, emphasised the importance of these efforts, stating “this project represents a crucial step towards helping the sector identify gaps, seize opportunities, and find ways to create a greater community impact through strengthened approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
Highlighting the long-term impact of the initiative, Royal Life Saving, General Manager - Capability & Industry, RJ Houston advised “this research underscores our commitment to supporting and advocating for more people to participate in swimming and water safety activities at their local pool. Increasing diversity and equity in aquatic settings not only benefits facilities but helps ensure no one is left behind in learning essential swimming and water safety skills.
“With better DEI practices, we can achieve broader social impacts across communities.”
Matt Cameron, Manager of Neighbourhood and Built at VicHealth, noted VicHealth’s commitment to an inclusive approach in public health and community wellbeing, stating "supporting inclusive, accessible spaces in our communities is central to VicHealth’s mission. We’re proud to partner on research that fosters equitable access to aquatic and leisure facilities, building healthier, more connected neighbourhoods for all Victorians."
Participation in this survey will provide invaluable data to guide industry-wide efforts towards a more inclusive and socially impactful aquatic and leisure sector. To contribute, please visit the survey here
The research team would like to thank the following groups who have contributed insights, feedback and supported the distribution of the survey: Aligned Leisure, AUSTSWIM, Belgravia Leisure/Belgravia Foundation, BlueFit, Cardinia Council, Life Saving Victoria, Surfing Victoria and the Y as well as the members of the National Aquatic Industry Committee.
The survey is open until 30th November 2024, with all respondents eligible to enter a draw to win one of 10 $100 JB Hi-Fi vouchers.
